What Are Standard Aluminum Wine Bottle Cap Dimensions
Dec 02, 2025 10:54:31
As the "safety guardian" of alcoholic beverage packaging, the size of aluminum wine bottle caps not only affects sealing performance but also directly relates to bottle compatibility and opening experience. Many people wonder: are screw caps and open-top caps the same size? The answer is no.

Screw Caps
Screw caps are widely used in wine, fruit wine, and some spirits due to their repeated screwing and strong sealing properties. Their size design revolves around the core of "thread engagement," with key parameters including diameter, height, and thread specification.
Industry data shows that screw cap sizes exhibit clear standardization characteristics:
Diameter range: Mainstream specifications are concentrated between 20mm and 38mm, with wine commonly using 30mm-31.5mm diameter screw caps paired with a height of 18mm-22mm; spirits mostly use 24mm-28mm diameter caps with a corresponding height of 14mm-18mm.
Thread precision: The tolerance between the outer diameter (T) and inner diameter (E) of the thread must be controlled within ±0.3mm. For example, the outer diameter of a 28mm screw cap is typically 28mm, and the inner diameter is approximately 26mm, ensuring precise engagement with the male thread on the bottle neck.
Special specifications: 38mm large-diameter screw caps are commonly found in large-capacity health-preserving wines, with a height reaching 24mm. A thickened EVA gasket enhances the seal.
The core logic of this size design is "adaptive sealing"—different bottle caps (such as 187ml small bottles and 750ml standard bottles) require screw caps of corresponding diameters. The thread pitch is typically 3.36mm, ensuring smooth screwing and preventing loosening.
Twist-off caps
Twist-off caps (also known as twist-off aluminum caps) are the mainstream choice for white wine and medicinal wines. Their most significant characteristic is that the anti-theft ring breaks after opening and cannot be restored. Unlike screw caps, its size design prioritizes "one-time sealing" and "ease of opening."
The size differences of twist top wine bottles are mainly reflected in the following aspects:
Diameter Classification: Specific specifications are formed according to the volume of the wine. For example, 500ml health wine commonly uses a 50.6mm diameter twist cap with a sealing edge height of 5.8mm; 75ml seahorse wine is suitable for a 51.0mm diameter and 5.5mm height specification, with tolerances strictly controlled within ±0.1mm.
Structural relationship: The skirt height of the twist cap directly affects the anti-theft ring performance, and is usually slightly lower than that of the twist cap (mostly 5.5mm-6mm), but the diameter is generally larger. Some large-capacity steel-cask wines have twist tops with a diameter of up to 55mm and a height of 13.5mm.
International comparison: In the European and American markets, 26mm is the common diameter for twist caps, but they are divided into twist-off and pry-off types. The two types are the same size but have different metal hardness. The difference in opening method is not due to size difference.
